Traditionally, when you download new email messages, they are moved from the server to your email client. IMAP works differently - your emails are always stored on the server, and your email client acts as an interface for you to view, modify and delete them. This has huge advantages when you collect your email from more than one email client, such as from different computers or from your mobile phone. Whatever device you use to delete, move folders, or reply to emails - the changes will always be reflected on all of your email clients.
